Islamabad: Pakistan is safe for investment and its growth in telecom is highly impressive, a world’s leading telecom solutions provider said on Thursday.

We have found policies of Pakistan very friendly towards local as well as foreign investors and we plan to boost our investments here, said Mr. Qiu Xuefeng, Deputy President, Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. This he said while talking to Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President Pakistan Economy Watch, who was on a visit to Huawei’s global core network workshop to acknowledge company’s contribution towards the development of telecom sector. Mr. Qiu Xuefeng informed him that our core network solutions are the key to operational excellence, the foundation for increasing revenues from new services and the backbone of service specialisation.

We want to share our achievements in with telecom operators of Pakistan who are neck-to-neck with top operators of the world, he said. “We have conducted workshops in Pakistan, Indonesia and Thailand and will soon arrange such workshops in Middle East, Europe, Latin America and USA.” Mr. Qiu informed. Presently one billion people are benefiting from our technologies. At the occasion, Dr. Murtaza Mughal said we admire the phenomenal growth achieved by our Chinese friends. They have achieved in a couple of decades what others could not. While calling Huawei as a long-term strategic partner, Dr. Mughal emphasized that Pakistan offers vast investment opportunities in the telecom sector as it is the most connected country in South Asia, with the highest teledensity.

Pakistan has the world’s largest WiMAX network while it has one of the world’s most aggressive Fibre-to-the-Home rollouts. He said that PEW believes more opportunities are waiting to Huawei and other investors in Pakistan. He drew attentions of Huawei officials to step into other IT related fields and internet security business in a bid to serve the humanity. The company is set to rule the global telecom solution industry as far as it allocates 10 per cent of its revenue in R&D. It is just a matter of time before Huawei becomes a major player across the world; others will easily become a non-factor, said Dr. Mughal.

The telecommunications sector attracted an investment of about $9 billion in the last three years.

This was stated by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority chairman Dr Mohammad Yaseen while speaking at the inaugural session of 4th connect conference 2009 at Karachi Expo Centre here on Wednesday.

Long distance and international operators have made huge investment in optical fiber, system up-gradation and installation of other communications equipment, he said.

He said that the companies, like Multi-net, Wateen and Link Direct, have installed almost 15,000 km long optical fiber between Karachi and Peshawar.

If the optical fiber of PTCL is included, the total length of optical fiber will reach 30,000 to 40,000 kms, he noted.

Talking about measures to check quality of service, Dr Yaseen pointed out that the PTA has installed state-of-the-art equipment for this purpose.

‘We are carrying out a survey to assess the quality of Internet service providers on a daily basis, and on the basis of our findings, we are suggesting them about corrective measures,’ he said.

Dr Yaseen pointed out that billions of rupees have been collected by USF Company for laying network lines by the operators.

Under the agreement, all telecom operators are required to deposit 1 to 1.5 per cent of their revenue minus expenses with USF Company.

This company provides a subsidy from this amount to telecom service operators for laying a broad band network to unconnected areas in the country, he added.

So far, two districts, including Faisalabad, have been provided broad band facility while Multan would also be connected soon, he said. The PTA chairman said that the number of mobile phone subscribers has increased from five million in 2004 to 91 million in 2009 and fixed line users have grown from 3.7 million in 2004 to 4.5 million in 2009.—APP
