Qatari news source The Peninsular is reporting that wi-tribe Pakistan, part of the wi-tribe Group and a subsidiary of the Qatar Telecom (Qtel) Group, has begun commercial WiMAX services in Pakistan. Initially the service will be available in Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore and Rawalpindi. Commenting on the launch Sami Hinedi, CEO of wi-tribe Group said: ‘We strongly believe in improving the lifestyle of our customers by understanding their needs and offering them the best personalised customer experience. We want to provide solutions that are simple, easy and valued by individuals, businesses and the government.’

The launch comes after wi-tribe Pakistan announced that it had signed a multi-year WiMAX deal with vendor Motorola in October 2008. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, wi-tribe Pakistan is a joint venture between Qtel and Saudi Arabia’s A.A. Turki Group of Companies (ATCO); in May 2007 the two companies completed the purchase of a 75% stake in Islamabad-based Burraq Telecom, revealing plans to offer basic broadband and VoIP services after rebranding the operator under the wi-tribe moniker.

LAHORE: Pakistan Telecom-munication Company Limited (PTCL), in order to provide sales and after sales support of PTCL corporate product portfolio to the SME market, has signed a strategic agreement with Habib Rafiq International Pvt Ltd (HRI).

According to details of the agreement, Habib Rafiq International (Pvt.) will provide PTCL’s next generation technologies and network, to their existing and new customers in the SME segment and will be responsible for 24 hour after sales support and customer care.

PTCL Senior Executive Vice President, Commercial, Naveed Saeed addressing on the occasion said, that with this partnership the SME market will receive the best of both worlds – Best-of-breed communication products from PTCL and best-in-class support from HRI. He also added that HRI will help PTCL to maintain its leadership position in the telecom market of Pakistan by providing high quality products and customer services to SMEs. staff report

Telenor has inked a deal with ZTE to buy up to two million USB modems over the next twelve months. The deal covers Telenor’s 13 operating companies in countries including Denmark, Hungary, Malaysia, Norway, Pakistan, Russia, Sweden and Ukraine.

“ZTE was selected for this agreement, alongside one other supplier, based on a combination of product performance and quality, and the ability to quickly customise products to suit our customers,” said Kjell Nordhagen, Terminal Procurement Director, Telenor Group. “They outperformed the competition on virtually every criteria so the decision was easy for us.”

ZTE is the world’s second largest and fastest growing supplier of data cards and sold over 10 million data cards in 2008, a 426% increase over 2007 sales. Shipments in Q2 2009 are expected to be over five million.
