Although serious things about home burglaries have not been reported in the recent times, but the home security system retailers have witnessed a spike in the sales. And when the holiday season seems to be around, there has been an abnormal rise in the sales of security systems. Now, you might be wondering what the reason is for this sudden rise. Well, I thought of discussing some of the reasons with my readers so that they come to know about the precautious measures that people are taking, especially in the holiday season.

Most families plan to leave their houses during holiday season and thus plan to take more protective measures. They are well aware of the fact that burglars know their houses are filled with costly gifts during this time. So they are always urged for reassessing the activities that may lead to their homes falling prey to any unwelcome guests.

Few Safety Precautions – A Must for Every Homeowner

No matter how much safe you consider your house or neighborhood to be, you should make sure that you lock the doors and pull them shut. Even if you are in your home, there is always a risk of a break-in if the entry area is left unprotected. Keep the garage doors locked, especially during night. An open garage door is an open invite to spies who are looking for those special equipments you might have stored there. Start getting your neighbors and encourage them, if possible, to notify you of strange visitors or vehicles around your home. In that case, you can even inform the neighbors if there are some unusual visitors (like repair men or crew). You must also keep a close eye on the holiday parties as well as get-togethers you arrange for.

Another very helpful tip for protecting your home is stop advertising about the wonderful gifts by displaying their boxes by the street. Simply break down those boxes so that they find their places in the garbage.

Importance of Installing a Home Security System

Installing a home security system increases the peace of mind of home owners as well the enjoyment for upcoming celebrations. Wireless capabilities, video cameras and even customized monitoring options give the homeowners protection within their budget which makes sense for the whole family. Exercising more concern especially during the holidays and even special occasions is required.

So the homeowners prefer to buy home security systems that would safeguard their houses when they are not at home. The holiday season is a time to enjoy leaving behind the worries of life. During this time, most homeowners do not want to risk their peace of mind. With so many security system retailers around, choose the best one that will assure you of complete safety and protection.

With the rise in home security system sales and installation of security systems in most homes, homeowners have made an attempt to help the police in dealing with burglary attempts in most countries.

So in order to ensure complete peace of mind, install a home security system today!

Late last year, the cloud computing industry drew the proverbial line, as did all other industries. 2011 was definitely not an easy year by all accounts, with the global economic downturn continuing to affect major players the world over. The past year also saw Asian markets and producers climbing even further up the tracks, especially with respect to the computing and information technology industry. As Asia continues to invest in developing and researching new facilities, services, features and products (that the rest of the world will only likely see in a few years from now), the questions we all pose about the future remain valid. Cloud computing is definitely still an up-to-date revolutionary trend that is shaping the way we do business and even the day-to-day way in which we approach information. What, then, are the major trends that experts predict will explode in 2012? According to some of the most educated voices on the matter, 2012 will not be an explosive year, but one which will deliver ‘more of the same’. But what exactly does that ‘the same’ entail?

Look out for the Asians

According to the experts, businesses that are based in Asia will continue to migrate toward the cloud, as they seek to leverage experienced serviced providers with key positions in critically strategic information technology positions. The cloud has already proved its usefulness and efficiency in this respect over the past few years. In addition, larger businesses will continue to or initiate their expansionist trends. Going global in the cloud industry means service providers that are based in the United Kingdom or the United States of America will rake in a hefty part of the proverbial pie.

Move Toward the Mainstream

A subtle trend dominated the cloud computing services market for as long as it has been around. It is so subtle that we even included it in the previous sentence, without you even flinching. Everything information technology-related is becoming a service these days. This trend will become so pervasive and ubiquitous that, experts argue, people will stop referring to the cloud as ‘the cloud’. It is already a common occurrence to base most of your activities online. Some of the more astute industry observers may have noticed that some of the largest players on the Internet scene have been creeping into the cloud industry in recent years. This trend will continue to grow and develop, while quality services will attract increasing amounts of capital, as mainstream, non IT-involved businesses will want to keep up to speed with the latest tech trends.

Security Alerts in the Cloud

The one moot point when it comes to the cloud is the issue of its security. This will continue to be a hot topic, up for debate, since Internet security measures are on an ever-increasing trend of becoming tougher and tougher. Major companies set to implement the cloud will be particularly concerned with the security of their data, as well as with any possible breaches of local and international security regulations.

Nowadays, businesses rely on high speed communication in order to access vital resources at the drop of a hat. The demands of modern business mean that the task of managing the costs and complexities of an extensive network are often outsourced to a managed network provider. So how do you know your network provider is up to the job?

Internet access, cloud computing and VoIP services all need a specialist provider to manage the network, ensuring the business is fully functional at all times. A flawed network can slow a business down, hampering the workflow of staff.

A broken or faulty network can potentially cost a business much more than time alone; if an organisation utilises VoIP and relies on cloud access to run effectively, then a broken network could mean no communication with the outside world, and no access to important documents.

Clients and customers will not be happy if your business is unreachable, and persistent issues could lead to your reputation being damaged, a drop in sales and even a decline in long-term client retention. Your network service provider should have a continuity plan in place in order to avoid any unwanted downtime. If not, then that provider is best avoided.

Sensitive information is often stored on cloud networks, which makes protection and security of the up most importance. Physical theft is also a genuine issue, particularly during this time of recession. The provider’s data centres should have 24-hour security, to deter thieves and vandals, in addition to stringent systems security to prevent hacking, denial of service attacks and other cybercrime activities.

Naturally, successful businesses will grow with time, so a provider should have the ability to grow with your business, seamlessly integrating new technologies and new office locations into the network. If a service provider can’t grow with your business and keep up with modern technologies, again, then give them a wide berth.

Finally, and crucially, any trustworthy network provider should offer roundthe-clock support and resolve any issues efficiently and effectively. A business must be sure of the level of support they will receive. If a company pays good money to a managed service provider, then the service must be provided in a way that allows the business to run without a hitch.

Do Check: Voice: More a Service than a Protocol

A network service should be functional and accessible, and provide uncompromised usability. If a provider is not up to the task, it’s probably time for a business to assess its options and perhaps look elsewhere to satisfy its managed service needs.

If you are in need of some new APC batteries, it is very important to know where they are coming from. When purchasing from an Original Equipment Manufacturer (or OEM), there is usually a markup involved. Since this is considered a necessity item, this strategy is usually successful. This has been shown by numerous studies where the profit margin is higher on these types of items rather than the actual product they are needed for. Since most people are so busy with their own lives, ordering a new set of batteries typically involves calling the manufacturer. This is how the price has become fixed at a higher than usual level.

However, smart shoppers have found that there is an alternative to the OEM. These are 3rd party or aftermarket firms who can offer a cheaper (and sometimes better) solution. In many cases, the battery will even have a higher capacity. This doesn’t mean taking the first price however, as many of these devices are made from lower quality parts. As with anything else, it is buyer beware since purchasing an APC battery from a unknown vendor for example may result in a lower price but a less efficient unit.

This does not mean that every battery manufactured in some countries is made from poor quality components. In point of fact, most of the components originate in the Far East. Many times the batteries are either fully or partially assembled before shipment to the United States. The key point is not the place of assembly, but the vendor who is responsible for selling the units.

A good quality device will contain high quality plastic, high efficiency cells and employ quality control methods in the manufacturing process. It usually takes a few months for any problems to start showing up in a battery. This might now help consumers after the fact. A good rule of thumb is to inquire about the warranty on the product being purchased. This is not 100% foolproof, but provides a good indication of whether a maker actually stands behind their product.

Another excellent idea is to ask the seller whether or not the intended battery to be purchased has been heat sealed. This can prevent acid seepage which could cause tremendous damage to expensive equipment. A good vendor will offer a guarantee in writing and has been in business for awhile. This will ensure that that a good quality battery has been purchased.

There have been a lot of technological advances since 2000 that deserve their place in history. Its amazing to think how far we have come in such a short time, with gadgets seemingly taking leaps and bounds every year and improving on already amazing ideas and technology. These not only make our lives easier but also help more products enter the marketplace based upon these technologies.

There are five advances that I think really stand out more than the others simply because they have turned the world upside down with their place in our world, making it easier for consumers and businesses alike to reach more people, bring in new products and generally live a better life.

1. Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is now found in just about every store, hotel, house, and café around the world, making it possible to connect to the internet without stringing a bunch of cables into the back of the computer. Since this advance, it has helped cell phones, tablets, laptops and other devices enter the marketplace more successfully as well. When our wifi goes down we forget how amazing this technology actually is.

Do Check: How Satellite Internet is Changing our Media and News Sources

2. Social media

Sites like Facebook and Twitter are extremely technologically advanced and it’s not just about helping others stay in touch with each other. Businesses rely on this social media more than anyone else in order to reach their target demographics, get feedback on their products and market successfully. A number of technologies have imitated these sites and the academic world has latched on by offering courses in social media.

3. The Smart Phone

The cell phone was advanced but the smart phone has gone above and beyond. The Android and the iPhone have popularized the concept but there are many manufacturers who have entered the arena. With apps becoming more and more popular as a way of doing business, the smart phone has internet access, a camera, gps, and many other features, making it an integral part of one’s life. It’s no longer just for making phone calls – it’s used for school, shopping, business, gaming, research and other aspects of life.

4. Electric Cars

There’s no longer a need to use gas or petrol to fuel cars. With the advancement of electrical and hybrid cars, it’s truly a green solution for the earth. Since the first prototype was designed, many manufacturers have piggy-backed on the idea to create more designs that use just electric or a combination of electric/petrol. As technology advances are made, the electric car is getting larger and faster as well.

5. 3D technology

3D technology is getting smaller and more readily available. The technology is going into televisions, smart phones, cinemas, laptops and everywhere else. Over the past 5 years, there’s been more 3D movies released to the big screen than ever before and the trend will continue as more television brands are releasing 3D televisions to the public. The 3D glasses are more advanced than the old paper ones and it’s changing the way people think about watching television and playing video games. However glasses less technology on a mass scale will bring this even further.

Paragon RT can help bring your technology to the masses with a rapid prototyping service and can work with low volume production options as well.

The world of technology is growing faster than ever imagined. Not so long ago were the days when you had to choose between slowly surfing badly designed websites and making a phone call. These days, the demand for constant communication, access to news and online banking while on the move has pushed the evolution of the internet into the palm of our hands.

It is no longer a sight to behold if someone is walking down the street, streaming their Spotify playlists through their brand new Galaxy Tab, while reading the news and Tweeting about it at simultaneously. 3G (third generation) technology has allowed us to access and share information at the click of a button or a swipe of a finger.

It’s a hard concept to grasp that just ten years ago we would sit patiently for two whole minutes and wait for a webpage to load when now, we curse slow-loading mobile internet more than bad traffic on a Friday afternoon.

Where would we be without the technological advancement of 3G? Ten years in the past is our best guess. Without 3G, remote working would be completely out of the question and switching off between work and home was as easy as not having emails bombarding your mobile phone at all times of the night.

It’s not just the workaholic that has been affected by the advancement of internet on the move. Travellers benefit from mobile GPS systems, while families split between cities and countries can chat face-to-face while on the train.

If you find yourself bored whilst commuting to and from A to B, you have the option to download a book or some music, browse the App Store for another addictive game or Facebook the journey away.

The power of 3G, however, was greatly underestimated until recent events across the world. Student protests in London, uprisings in theMiddle East and help in finding loved ones after the Japanese tsunami are only a few examples of how 3G technology has helped organise major events.

Citizen journalism has also been on the rise since the ability to upload and share information has become so easy. The Hudson River emergency landing is probably the most famous example of an innocent bystander snapping a shot and sharing it with the world before the newspapers were able to get on the scene.

May 2011 saw the Twitter sphere explode with the news of Osama Bin Laden’s death before the Whitehouse had the chance to give an official statement and the Google Nexus One was revealed online before mainstream news, or even Google itself, got a look in.

The advancement of mobile internet can only get faster and more efficient as it grows in popularity across the world. Currently, 4G is being tested around the UK and promises ultra-broadband speeds and an alternative to home wifi connections. Watch this space – it may not be long before your whole online life goes mobile. The developed countries are talking about 4G and in Pakistan we are still waiting when 3G will come in Pakistan.

On the outside, seems like it may be threatened by the array of inexpensive and convenient methods of on-demand streaming that seemingly hammer in the final nails to DVD’s and Blu-ray’s coffin. While VOD has become very popular, it has a negative effective that disc-based media easily escapes: controversy. Many TV networks, like AMC, are very angry at how quickly VOD services pump out movies that were just in theaters, making AMC and other similar channels all but useless relics of TV history. However, despite how hard the industry is pushing to eradicate disc-based media, and regardless of the high VOD adoption rates according to Netflix and other similar services, DVDs and Blue-rays are still going strong, allowing the three media types to work together in harmony.

The Consumer Electronics Association is an industry that makes reports about electronic media and many other factors of entertainment and electronics, and they have recently released a report detailing VOD and disc-based media. According to their report, VOD has made significant leaps and bounds in taking the market. However, physical distribution is still going very strong. Not only that, but according to their report, it is projected that DVDs and Blur-rays will be around until at least 2021. This is contrary to many reports, which estimate that discs will go away much quicker, but there are many reasons why they still have some life.

According to their report, there are several factors that really give DVDs life. Portability and inexpensive prices make this media still viable, along with DVD duplication being relatively easy compared to other duplication methods. Not only that, but on the side of Blu-rays, sales of Blu-ray players jumped a huge 86% in 2010, which is surprising considering that VOD also became big around the same time. This has lead them to estimate that discs will fade up much more slowly than VHS.

There is also the notion of staying power. DVDs have been around for about 15 years, yet it still continues to be a popular and viable media format used in many homes. This not only bodes well for DVDs, but also for the Blu-ray successor.

While DVDs are slowly becoming antiquated through Blu-ray technology, Blu-rays themselves are doing very well sales wise. Some people have been worried that this media would be unable to meet rising demand for HD video, however Blue-ray has boldly jumped into this role and is largely known as a superior quality product. While prices are still high, they are expected to lower as adoption rates increase.

While this is largely an estimate, many are assuming that DVD rental rates will be close to those of 2008, a large year for DVD rentals. Not only that, but something else worth noting is how much Americans spend on both physical discs and digital VOD services. Digital services, on average, are receiving an annual amount of $2 billion, which is no small number. However, physical media is much higher at $18 billion, which goes to show that disc-based media is going to be around for quite a long time.

Cloud Computing continues to dominate the IT world. As the leading trend in the industry, businesses are learning they can slash costs and improve productivity by relocating their IT resources in the cloud. Cloud technologies have relieved small businesses of many cumbersome administrative duties and have allowed them to produce more by using mobile and remote workers.

As cloud technologies evolve, companies are finding that data management is the largest cost associated with IT. Centralizing all types of data in the cloud had reduced that cost, by blending platform, infrastructure, software and storage services. Although the different elements of the cloud are becoming less distinct over time, the core role of the cloud, data storage, continues to grow in importance.

Problems with Local Storage

Companies have grappled with issues of data storage for a long time. In the workplace, employees at local workstations often store data to the hard drive on their computer rather than on the server, making that data difficult for other employees to locate and retrieve. At the same time, local workstations have posed a data security threat because rogue employees regularly copy company data from local servers to removable storage and make it available for sale or use it for unauthorized personal use.

Network-wide data access problems are often exacerbated by a lack of a comprehensive backup plan that leaves companies dead in the water in the event of server or workstation failures. Even worse, some businesses find themselves hampered by a lack of sufficient storage space. Lacking time and expertise, many companies regularly choose to delete archives to free up server space rather than add storage capacity to their local network.

Remote and mobile workers have long experienced frustration with data access problems. Data stored on an employee’s workstation at the office is often inaccessible to VPN users. Meanwhile, much of the work they do ends up being stored on local hard drives that belong to the employees, not the company.

Do Check: How to Back up Your Data

These dilemmas are just a few of the data storage problems business face almost daily. Thanks to the development of cloud technologies, businesses can liberate their employees, utilize the global workforce and secure their data all at once.

Cloud Storage Basics

In its basic form, cloud storage acts like a hard drive, linked to a computer or server by a small program that runs locally. When a user saves data, it goes to the cloud drive rather than to a local hard drive. In the cloud, the data is scanned for viruses, secured and backed up by cloud service providers. Business data is now accessible to all authorized users in the company. When a company needs more storage capacity, all they do is ask for it and it’s available almost immediately without any administrative overhead.

When companies rely on cloud-based software services, cloud storage becomes even more important. Software administrators can restrict applications so they save data only to cloud storage, instantly solving various problems ordinarily associated with traditional software and data storage models.

The phrase satellite Internet often conjures images of secret messages being sent and received from within remote military bunkers, an expensive and unobtainable technology used only by the armed forces.

In truth, whilst the military does indeed make use of it, satellite Internet is far from difficult to obtain and is useful for a lot more than military operations, and as such it’s use is becoming much more common place in journalism.

There are many reasons for this, satellite Internet is fast, on par with the average high speed broadband, reliable (satellites have a tendency to remain in the sky) and it’s costs are comparable to that of a regular Internet connection through an I.S.P.

Yet the most alluring concept is that of true portability, without any downsides found in other methods of attaining a portable Internet connection such as a 3G dongle. There is no hunting for a signal and then crawling along at slow speeds when all that can be found is a sliver of 3G reception, you just set up and go. The connection comes from the sky instead of underground cables and so there is no need for a supporting infrastructure.

Do Check: Satellite Internet is a Fast and Affordable

Now what does this have to do with journalism you ask? Well, consider the ongoing unrest in Libya and Egypt. Think about all of those videos and reports that have appeared on the Internet despite the seemingly insurmountable obstacle of the country having been cut from the Internet. How did they get there? Were they recorded and then smuggled across the border? Snuck out through a series of underground tunnels? No. The answer is, for the most part, satellite Internet. Satellite Internet allows coverage of events to be seen across the world as they occur and, short of bringing down the satellite itself, there is no way to stop it.

Now that is all very well for large, established stories and events where crews of reporters and journalists can arrive on scene with relative ease, but it is when a story is just breaking or is otherwise inaccessible to traditional methods of journalism that we see how satellite Internet has helped in the field of social journalism.

A few years ago social journalism was all but unheard of, then the advent of sites such as twitter helped it to gain some momentum, but it wasn’t until satellite internet connections became readily available that social journalism really came into it’s own.

Now citizens themselves can report on events, even if there is a lack of traditional internet coverage and in a rising number of cases these ‘citizen journalists’ can be the only source of information during the initial hours of an event. Satellite Internet connections help to provide an insight into events that would otherwise never be told.

Satellite Internet is the next step for both journalism and it’s citizen based counterpart, allowing events to be reported as and when they happen, wherever they occur.

Dave Sanchez runs Satellite ISP comparison site Tooway Compare. He is already aware that Satellite Internet is in many ways superior to it’s cable counterpart and is accessible from anywhere in the world. Not only does he want you to know this, but he wants you to get the best deal if you choose a Satellite connection too!

Fuel economy and passenger safety are some of the new technological features offered by vehicles rolling out in 2012. As fuel prices rise the need for efficiency increases. Auto manufacturers are also stepping up vehicle occupant safety with a number of changes in airbag systems. Other features include advanced braking systems, which allow muscle cars that include the Dodge Challenger, the capability of coming to a complete stop at around 100 feet, when operating at a speed of 60mg.

In 2012, lighter engine components are one of the new designs that allow more cars to join the elite economical club offering at least 40 mpg while cruising down the highway. The 2012 Ford Focus, with a 2.0 liter engine, promises more efficient fuel consumption whether equipped with a manual or automatic transmission. The Honda Civic HF (Hybrid Fit) also joins the ranks of the group with a reported fuel economy of 41mpg on the highway. The Civic Hybrid not only offers 45mpg for long distance driving but also a combined total of 41mpg on and off the highway. Volkswagen’s Passat contains an imported diesel engine this year, which offers 43mpg on the highway, but increases the overall price of the vehicle.

With consumer safety in mind, General Motors plans to offer collision warning systems on some of the company’s 2012 vehicles. The optional warning system retails for around $295 and consists of a forward facing camera mounted behind the rear view mirror. The technology views a 37 degree angle span and identifies various vehicle types and pedestrians. The camera captures images at a rate of 14 per second and compares data for changes in the size of objects or people. When the technology perceives a possible collision, a red light illuminates accompanied by eight quick tones emitted through the front speakers.

Automobile owners have the option of setting the collision alert system to near, medium or far. The warning system also contains a lane deviation feature, which emits tones through a side speaker when the vehicle wheel encounters a line lane barrier without turn signal activation. Drivers turn the system on or off using controls conveniently located on the steering wheel. Vehicles available in 2012 with the warning system include the Chevy Equinox and the AMC Acadia, but GM promises that soon, a wider array of vehicles will offer the option.

General Motors also provided upgraded safety airbag features on a number of automobiles. The Ford Focus contains front seat and passenger airbag systems with tethers that inhibit immediate full bag extension, which decreases the number of chest and rib injuries for occupants. Side airbags now include seat sensors that not only detect seat position, but also determine passenger shoulder height and weight. This feature also gauges the necessity for full airbag expansion, which reduces head and neck injuries. More and more automobile manufacturers are increasing the number of airbags in vehicles, with some containing up to 10 bags that include knee protection.
