Telenor launched opportunity for charity donations via SMS in Norway on Wednesday. The Norwegian Red Cross is the first organisation to start using this new donation tool, in the work to help flood victims in Pakistan. The mobile telephone has become a natural and integrated part of our everyday lives, and today Telenor is providing an opportunity for customers to donate gifts to charitable organisations by sending a text message (SMS). Managing director of Telenor Norway, Ragnar Kårhus said, “The situation in Pakistan is very serious. Hopefully the collections via SMS will be a helpful tool in the rescue and emergency work in progress. Telenor Pakistan received Best Place to Work Award 2010 by Pakistan Society of Human Resources Management (PSHRM) and Engage Human Resources in Karachi at a local hotel. The Award was announced by Vice President Human Capital Division Telenor Pakistan Nayab Baig at the convocation ceremony of Telenor Pakistan’s Ambassador’s Program held in Lahore.

The Telenor Pakistan Ambassador Program’s ceremony saw attendance from the Federal Minister for Youth Affairs Shahid Hussain Bhutto, MPA Senior Minister (Punjab) Raja Riaz Ahmed, Vice President Corporate Affairs and Chief Strategy Officer, Telenor Pakistan, Aamir Ibrahim and Vice President Human Capital Division, Telenor Pakistan Nayab Baig and the Telenor Pakistan Ambassadors.

Customers Beware

Please be aware that some Telenor Pakistan customers are receiving hoax calls and fraudulent SMS informing them that they have won a valuable prize. To get the prize, customers are told to buy some scratch cards and tell the calling party the numbers on them. The fraudulent party immediately transfers the balance to unknown accounts thus depriving the customers of their money.

Please also be aware that in some instances, Telenor Pakistan customers are receiving hoax calls and fraudulent SMS asking them to reply. The SMS contains a hidden message which transfers prepaid balance from the customer’s account on reply.

PLEASE NOTE THAT SUCH CALLS AND SMS ARE A FRAUD.

This notice is being given in the public-interest to inform our customers from fraudulent practices. However Telenor Pakistan does not hold any responsibility or is in any way liable for compensation what so ever against such fraudulent activities.

The widespread devastation caused by the recent floods throughout Pakistan has already claimed over 1,600 lives and affected more than 14m people with numbers expected to rise in the coming weeks. Conservative estimates indicate that the magnitude of destruction is more than the combined devastation caused by the 2004 tsunami, the 2005 Pakistan earthquake and the 2010 Haiti earthquake — three mega-disasters of recent times.

Keeping in view the magnitude of loss caused by the floods, Telenor Pakistan has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Pakistan Red Crescent Society and pledged Rs100 million in funding and telecommunication services, towards relief and rehabilitation of those affected by the floods.
